The Friends of Freedmens Cemetery was founded in 1997 for the purposes of preserving, commemorating and researching a little-known Civil War-era African-American burying ground in Old Town Alexandria. Lillie Finklea and Louise Massoud were the founding members, and they and Tim Dennee, Char McCargo Bah, Shellyn McCaffrey and Ludwig Gaines made up the original volunteer board of directors of the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
